Is the Government Following Me?

How would someone know if they have been spied on by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), or National Security Agency (NSA)?

There are three scenarios for this situation:

  1. One day out of the blue you are approached by agents for one of these agencies asking to speak with you. They reveal a little information that shows they have been watching you and ask you some questions. They actually know the answers to the questions, they just want to understand if you are going to cooperate with them to get someone more important, or if you are going to be charged. They don’t say that, of course. Or if you are the larger target yourself, you will find out when they come to arrest you for an indictment.
  2. You never find out because they were unable to find enough incriminating evidence(incredibly unlikely) or they find that your crimes are just low-level state violations. In that latter case, they may refer the information to state agencies or they may not- depending on two factors: The severity of your likely crimes and what type of person you appear to be. If you are a generally decent person who maybe has a vice, they often won’t made a state referral. They are looking to make an impact in major crime, not ruin lives for no reason.

You never find out because they were never investigating you in the first place. Many people who are stuck with consistent thoughts about being followed by such agencies are suffering from a mix of paranoia and delusions of grandeur. An over inflated sense of self is required in most cases to allow for the idea of you being important enough to be investigated by these federal agencies(unless you ARE up to no good). Most people suffering from this leapfrog right over the idea that local or state agencies would be watching them. Why? Because that is for “common” people and you are somehow very important and special. The mind is truly amazing at making a fool of us when we let it.

If you think a federal agency is following you there are two steps anyone should immediately do:

  1. Hire a lawyer. They can check into it for you and prepare for the fallout should the worst happen. This can make an impending arrest or interview much more comfortable for you
  2. Speak with a therapist to logically walk through your clues/feelings to see if it makes sense or not that you would be followed/investigated. You don’t have to tell them what you may have done wrong, but just give them an idea why you are afraid you are being followed. Most people have very little rational reason to be interviewed by a local journalist, let alone a federal agent. A therapist can help you get past irrational obsessive thoughts or reassure you that your suspicions might be right. If you have or are planning to commit a crime that will hurt or kill others a psychiatric professional will have to report you. For non-violent crimes they do not report you and you are legally protected from that information being used against you. But check with your lawyer before specifically admitting to anything. You CAN speak in generalities with a doctor without incriminating yourself though.

Good luck and look at EVERYTHING logically. Always start from the idea that you really are not that special in the grand scheme of things. Keep reminding yourself that only high level crimes warrant investigation by these people(or associations to high level criminals/spies/etc.). Federal investigations are ridiculously expensive and require huge teams of people collaborating. They won’t do that for some random person in your otherwise sleepy little neighborhood. Also, it’s a lot easier to follow someone in a major city than a small town. Remember that and use it to your advantage.

Note: Federal agencies don’t get access to satellite observation or drones on domestic soil for people below international terrorist/spy level crimes, so if you don’t see them in a small town, they aren’t there. If you think you see them, still assume they aren’t and talk it out with your lawyer and therapist.

One Solution?

When the wiretapping is done at telco level, it is impossible for the user to find it out”- It is not impossible, there is one way to find out. If you stop paying your bill and your phone service never gets turned off then you know it is being tapped. This is because when the police or feds issue a warrant to a telecom it comes with an order to not disconnect the phone for any reason.
